Hours before the announcement of his resignation from Gilas' head coaching job, Yeng Guiao shared his thoughts on what the national team needs to develop in order to be competitive in the World stage
Guiao bared that he had a talk with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas top brass, chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan, President Al Panlilio and Philippine Basketball Association chairman Ricky Vargas and among the topic discussed were about the future of the Gilas program.
During the meeting which Guiao described as 'exchange of views and recommendations', the preparation time of the national team and the skills development of the Filipino cagers were tackled.
Guiao pointed out that in order to be competitive in the world stage, the country has to develop its players pattern on how European teams play. The national team mentor said Gilas need to create a program to develop big guards and sweet-shooting and agile big men.
"Kahapon napagkwentuhan na rin namin nila boss, even the development of our players, napag usapan namin, we need to develop players with height who can play point guard and wings. Kasi ang mga gwardiya sa World level 6'7", 6'8" na eh yung 6'7", 6'8" natin sentro na natin yun. The other thing is, there are seven footers, 6'7", 6'11", di mo pwedeng iwanan sa three point area. They can space the floor and they have that skill (to knock it down)" Guiao explained.
"Just developing the skills that are required to be successful in the World level kailangan umpisahan na iyan mga bata palang," he added.
According to Guiao, the preparation of national team should not only start on the same year that there will be an international tournament that the country is joining.
"Sinasabi ko rin sa mga bossing natin na kung gusto natin na yung national team natin ay mag move forward, mag improve, ang sinasabi ko kasi, itong team natin ngayon kahit bigyan mo ng two to three months nag europe, di rin namin kaya talunin yung italy or yung serbia, baka siguro lalapit lang yung lamang, pero di natin tatalunin," said Guiao who wanted the national team to pattern their program to what the European countries have, which for the fiery mentor, currently the 'Mecca' of basketball in the World.
"Pero kung two, three, four years nasa Europe ka every year for two months eh baka pwede mo na tsambahan kasi," he added.
