Justin Arana showed the way as Arellano University (AU) outlasted Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), 87-81, to snap its three-game skid on Friday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 Seniors basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The 6-foot-7 center Arana poured in 24 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks in 36 minutes of action as the Chiefs improved to a 2-6 record at the expense of the Pirates, who suffered their first back-to-back losses in three years.

Salado backstopped Arana with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Archie Concepcion added 11 points, six caroms, and two dimes in the win.

“Napakalaking bagay (nitong panalo) kasi kelangan tumalo ng contender para umangat kami,” said AU head coach Cholo Martin post-game.

“This time hindi kami bumitaw. Salamat sa long preparation, sa mga cancellation of games.”

The Chiefs found their groove late in the third quarter up to early in the fourth, unleashing a 13-0 run that turned a 65-59 deficit into a 72-65 advantage.

However, the Pirates responded with a 12-5 run capped by a Jaycee Marcelino basket to tie the game at 77-apiece with 3:02 left in regulation.

But that only set up the stage for the heroics of Arana, Salado, and Jade Talampas, who joined hands to create an 8-1 Chiefs spurt that gave them a seven-point, 85-78 lead, with 50.9 seconds left in regulation.

That cushion proved to be enough for Arellano to hold on for the win.

Mike Nzeusseu paced LPU with 17 points and three boards, while Jayvee Marcelino backstopped him with 12 markers, seven rebounds, and two assists.

Jaycee Marcelino put up 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists for the Pirates, who dropped to a 6-3 record.
