Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao is hoping that the members of the team’s pool of players who played in the recently-concluded Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner's Cup Finals will be joining the Gilas practice starting Monday.
In an interview after the team’s practice, Guiao said that he believes that June Mar Fajardo, Christian Standhardinger, RR Pogoy, and Troy Rosario will be ready to join the practice given that the PBA Finals is over. Marcio Lassiter is not expected to return due to his MCL injury.
“They will be ready to make the jump from the Finals to the Gilas practice… Siguro Monday will be the best time for everybody to be here,” Guiao said.
Other players in the pool are Andray Blatche, Kiefer Ravena, Japeth Aguilar, Gabe Norwood, Paul Lee, Mark Barroca, Matthew Wright, Poy Erram, Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, Stanley Pringle, CJ Perez, and Robert Bolick.
Jordan Clarkson was also added to the pool, but is likely out of final roster contention.
Guiao also said that he hopes that the players joining the national team training will be able to cope with the system.
“Wala naman tayong idadagdag na players or mga bagong gagawin sa sistema. It’s just important that they are here and they are able to review and be able to absorb what we’ve been running all through these weeks,” Guiao said.
With the said players back, the team will have just one week before they fly to China and start their FIBA Basketball World Cup campaign on August 31 against Italy. That week, however, will include a pair of tune-up games against Australia.
“A week to get them accustomed to our system again. We are looking forward to the Australian series… That is going to be a period of learning and of observing what we still need to do with the team,” Guiao said.
