Heart-breaking loss to Rizal led to Batangas’ good team play against Pasig, says Jason Melano

Jason Melano admitted that the Batangas City Athletics loss to the Rizal Xentro Mall Golden Coolers led to their excellent play in the fourth quarter of their game against the Pasig Sta. Lucia Realtors on Friday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the Pasig Sports Complex.

Batangas was down 36-46 with 3:05 left in the third quarter but was solid in the fourth. They pulled out a 67-62 win over the home team even though they were missing the services of Jeff Viernes for the second game in a row.

“Siyempre sa amin, yung pagkatalo namin sa Rizal, talagang gumuguhit ‘yon sa heart namin. Masyadong masakit talaga kasi lamang kami ng 20. So sabi namin, wala kaming magagawa don. Ganun talaga, nangyayari talaga sa basketball ‘yon,” Melano said in an interview after their game on Friday.

“Kaya pagdating namin sa practice,nag-usap-usap kami na kailangan namin ma-execute mga play namin. Yung pagkatalo nanmin, marami kaming natutunan ‘don kaya ngayon talagang kailangan naming manalo. Yung morale kasi namin bumababa,” he added.

Without Viernes, the other Athletics needed to step up and hold steady, especially as they went toe-to-toe against the Realtors late in their game.

“Si Lester [Alvarez], leader namin, sabi niya malayo pa ‘to at kailangan namin manalo, kasi nga bumababa yung morale namin. So ayun, buti nakahabol sa awa ng diyos… Actually sa practice, yung game plan talaga namin is to stop yung three points, pero ang galing nila. Buti na sustain namin yung depensa hanggang huli,” Melano said.

The former Philippine Basketball Association baller also shared that the team is missing so much without Viernes in the lineup. Good thing was that their team chemistry is getting better.

“Medyo mahirap kasi si Jeff, kailangan-kailangan namin. Pero kailangan naming harapin yung katotohanan na wala siya. So kailangan na may ibang mag-step up kaya tulong-tulong na lang as a team, naglaro kami as a team,” Melano said.

“Ngayon mejo maganda na yung chemistry namin… Maganda yung usapan namin at maganda yung result ng game,” he added.

The Athletics now hold a 4-3 win-loss record.
