ROS coach Caloy Garcia will miss Ahanmisi, hopes for deep pool in next Rookie Draft

Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia admitted that the Elasto Painters will miss the services of Maverick Ahanmisi after the team traded him away in exchange for Ping Exciminiano and the Alaska Aces' lowest first round pick in the next Rookie Draft.
In an interview after Gilas Pilipinas’ practice on Friday, Garcia pointed out how Ahanmisi has been a vital part of the team throughout his three-year stay with the franchise, a stint that included a championship win in the 2016 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup.
“We’re going to miss somebody who gave us a championship. And, at the same time, he helped us a lot throughout the season. But this is a business, and we have to work with the trade because we’re trying to build up for the future,” Garcia said.
“Right now we have three first round picks, so I think it’s gonna be a good [help] with the draft this time. Then we also got Ping [Exciminiano], who’s a defensive player. Maybe given the chance to play he can show more,” he added.
Garcia also said that the trade was a huge gamble as they are now looking to get some good players through the upcoming Rookie Draft.
“Doing this is a gamble because you don’t know who’s going to join the draft. We’re hoping that it’s gonna be a deep draft though, so at least we can get three good players. Actually, we even have two second round picks also, so that’s five players. Basically, we’re just looking at who’s going to be available,” he said.
Garcia—who has been the head coach of Rain or Shine since 2016—also said the team is not looking to initiate any more trades, but may still entertain offers should they come.
“Yung trade, you never know until somebody comes up with an offer. But as of now, our mindset is to get players in the draft,” he said.
The former Letran Knights head coach also said that there is a ‘probability’ that more changes will come to the team, but he is looking to stick with what he has in his roster.
“Probably. Right now, hindi namin iniisip [yung trades], kasi we already lost Maverick. The nice thing about that is probably Rey [Nambatac] is stepping up, so I hope the others would follow. That’s the only thing we’re hoping right now, we’re not looking for trades right now, so we’ll stick with what we have right now.”
