Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) averted a late game collapse as the Pirates escaped the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) Blazers, 74-71, on Friday to notch their fifth straight win in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season 95 at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
With a huge third quarter peformance, LPU brought a 17-point, 68-51 lead in the fourth quarter but the Blazers rallied back with a 20-6 run to come with three points, 74-71, following the first made free throw of rookie forward Chris Flores with 3.7 seconds left.
Flores intentionally missed the second one with the hope that St. Benilde would get the offensive board but to no avail as LPU center Mike Nzeusseu grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock as the Pirates notched the victory for a 6-1 win-loss card.
"We have to give credit for CSB because they kept on pursuing," Pirates head coach Topex Robinson said of the Blazers comeback bid.
"We're always going take this win. We're happy that our boys step up."
Mike Nzeusseu put up a monster game for LPU, tallying a huge double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds. Jaycee Marcelino backstopped him with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting clip plus five rebounds for good measure, while Jeff Santos chipped in seven markers and two caroms.
Clement Leutcheu poured in 15 points and nine rebounds to lead St. Benilde as Robi Nayve and Yankie Haruna turned in 11 and nine points, respectively in the loss.
The Blazers saw their winning streak came to a stop and they now dropped to a 5-1 record.
