Defense has been the mantra of the defending champion San Juan Knights-Go for Gold and they are having a full display of it to start the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup.
Yesterday night, at their home court, the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan, the Knights won nine straight games without a taint in a dominating victory over the Nueva Ecija MiGuard.
"We just ball out our game, yun lang sinasabi ni coach Randy [Alcantara]. Yung game plan namin, yung pinapractice namin i-apply lang namin sa game," said John Wilson after dropping 26 points and five steals.
"Di kami magre-relax kahit sinong kalaban namin. Magpi-prepare kami as a team. Team defense yun yung bumubuhay sa amin. Team defense kaya talaga kami nanalo."
He also stressed that their familiarity makes it easy for them to execute their game plan.
"Kasi yung lineup namin from last season to this season, si Andoy [Estrella] at Jessie [Saitanan] lang nadagdag. Talagang nandun lang yung composure namin sa game. Yung familiarity namin 'pag naglalaro kami inside the court."
"Hindi namin iniisip yung 9-0. Pinag-uusapan namin kanina before the start kung makuha namin yung record, so be it."
Wilson also revealed the team's motivation in every game.
"Sa practice lagi kaming nag-uusap na let's compete each other para sa game madala namin yung intensity sa practice through the game."
