The San Juan Knights-Go for Gold's blazing start made Monday a historic night as they registered their ninth win of the Lakan season over the Nueva Ecija MiGuard, 109-95, in front of their home-crowd at the FilOil Flying V Centre, setting a new Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) record.
The defending champions shattered the record previously held by the Muntinlupa Cagers with a 8-0, win-loss record to start the MPBL Datu Cup.
Collective efforts by the Knights led to the hot start of their title defense.
John Wilson spearheaded the attack collecting 26 points, three rebounds, three assists and five steals. Mac Cardona also electrified the crowd with 18 points, six boards and three dimes while Jhonard Clarito and Larry Rodriguez inserted their might on the paint with 14 and 13 points respectively.
Nueva Ecija missed the inside presence of their veteran Jerwin Gaco another high-scoring output of Marlon Monte with 27 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Jimbo Aquino added 13 points.
Nueva Ecija was leading 18-10 in the first quarter before the ex-pros, Wilson, Cardona and Rodriguez went on a offensive display, scoring 10 points each in the half for a 55-38 San Juan advantage.
Enjoying a huge lead, San Juan still inserted a pressure defense on the third frame for a 82-66.
Nueva Ecija was able to cut the deficit to only 11 points but Wilson was quick to put out the fire to lock-in their victory.
The MiGuard without Gaco was helpless against the reigning champions.
San Juan will deal next the Cebu Sharks on August 19 at the Cuneta Astrodome while Nueva Ecija will go against the Imus-Khaleb Shawarma on August 20 at the Batangas City Coliseum.
