The Davao Occidental Tigers-Coco Life showed a title contender poise as they held off the Bataan Risers, 83-75, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Edging by just two points, Chito Jaime tied the game for Bataan at 63. James Forrester then drilled a triple for Davao but Alvin Pasaol replied with a three of his own. He then banks a shot off a spin move to give Bataan a precarious 72-71 lead.

Mark Yee then made a putback and a three-pointer to make it 76-72 for Davao. Pasaol was fouled on the next play drilling only a free throw. Joseph Terso then sneaked underneath for a layup off a nice assist from Billy Robles, 78-73, with 59.8 seconds left.

Alfred Batino scored inside, however it was the last stand of Bataan as Calo drained his free charities.

Forrester led Davao with 19 points, including four three-pointers, six rebounds, and two assists. Yee followed with an all-around outing of 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block. Robles added 15 markers, eight board, and three dimes.

On the other hand, Pasaol top-scored with 22 points and six rebounds. Bryron Villarias was the other double-digit scorer with 14 points and four boards.

Either team refused to give the lead after two quarters, 37 all.

Davao now holds an 8-1, win-loss, card while Bataan went to 4-5.

Davao will play the Quezon City Capitals on August 16 at the Pasig Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, Bataan will be having a layoff as they will be hosting the Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines on August 22 at the Bataan People's Center.
