GenSan shakes off Navotas late to extend win streak to five

The General Santos Warriors pulled off late to secure their five-game winning streak against the Navotas Uni-Pak Sardines, 87-76, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The tight ball game was separated midway of the fourth quarter as GenSan rode a 16-6 run to finish the game.

Robby Celiz completed a three-point play for a 74-70 lead. Kojak Meligrito and Algin Andaya scored on free throws for Navotas before Celiz, Mikey Williams and Pamboy Raymundo conspired an offensive barrage to bury Navotas as they recorded their biggest lead, 86-72.

Williams finished with a team high 22 points, 10 assists and five boards while Celiz had 21 points and nine rebounds. Raymundo added 19 markers and five boards.

For Navotas, Jhong Bondoc had 12 points while Meligrito and Elmer Cabahug chipped 10 points apiece.

The win put GenSan in a 7-2, win-loss, record while Navotas dropped to 2-4.

GenSan was barely leading in the first half, 25-22 in the first then carrying a 34-30 lead in the half.

Navotas fought back in the third as Meligrito bursted a personal 7-0 run, including back-to-back fast break layups to give Navotas a 57-56 lead before Williams took it back immediately with a triple followed by an inside points making 61-57. Jhong Bondoc then ended the quarter with a long triple, just inside the half court for a 64-63 Navotas lead.

Both squads were trading buckets not until the trio of Celiz, Willams and Raymundo took charge.

Navotas will be matching up with the Bicol Volcanoes on August 17 to be followed by Gensan versus the Muntinlupa Cagers
