Boston Celtic Kemba Walker and Los Angeles Laker Kyle Kuzma lead the list of the 17 finalists who can still make it to the final lineup of the USA’s national basketball team that will compete in the FIBA World Cup in China starting August 31.
Kuzma is the lone Laker in a list that includes Celtics Walker, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Jayson Tatum. The Sacramento Kings are all well-represented with one-time National Basketball Association champion Harrison Barnes, Marvin Bagley III, and De’Aron Fox all making the cut.
Milwaukee Bucks Brook Lopez and Kris Middleton are also in along with Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz), Joe Harris (Brooklyn Nets), and NBA champion Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors). Completing the list are PJ Tucker (Houston Rockets), Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers), Derrick White (San Antonio Spurs), and Mason Plumlee (Denver Nuggets).
Barnes won the 2016 Olympic gold medal with Team USA while Plumlee was a Gold Medalist in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
“We’re bringing a couple of young players from the Select Team so we’re going to be patient with the rest of the squad because we have plenty of time, we have two weeks to decide who will be the final 12,” said the team’s Managing Director Jerry Colangelo, according to USA Basketball News.
“Forty-eight hours before Game 1 in China is when we have to submit a roster so we want to make sure everyone gets a real shot,” Colangelo said.
Team USA will resume training camp on August 13-15 in Los Angeles before playing an exhibition contest versus Spain, FIBA’s No. 2 ranked team in the World, at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Aug. 16.
