Gilas Pilipinas went to work early and held steady late in the game to take a 73-63 victory over Ivory Coast and close out their Torneo de Malaga campaign on a winning note on Sunday at the Jose M. Martin Carpena in Spain.
Gilas was up 24-20 early when Robert Bolick knocked in a three-pointer and Andray Blatche completed a four-point play to power the Philippine team to a 12-5 run and a 36-25 lead with 2:04 left in the first half.
Gilas led 39-29 at the end of the first two quarters and posted their biggest lead of 12, 50-38, with three minutes left in the third before taking a 52-42 advantage into the final frame. Ivory Coast then threatened late, cutting the lead to five, 63-68, with less than two minutes left in the game.
Blatche, however, sank two free throws and Bolick capped his impressive outing with a three-pointer to seal the victory.
Bolick top-scored for Gilas with 19 points while Blatche tallied 18 points and 18 boards for Philippine team.
Gilas missed a possible Finals showdown against Marc Gasol and the Spanish national team because of their loss against Congo.
