Letran outlasts EAC to register fourth straight win

Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) outlasted Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 91-89, on Tuesday to notch its fourth straight win in the NCAA season 95 Men’s Seniors basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena.

The Knights trailed by as much as 15 points in the first half but managed turn things around in the second where they led by three points after the third quarter.

However, the Generals showed their resiliency once more as they unleashed an 11-2 run - built around Marvin Taywan’s nine straight points and Jethro Mendoza’s layup - to pull themselves within a point, 90-89, with 20 ticks left.

At the 12-second mark, Mendoza then fouled Bonbon Batelier, who split his charities for a 91-89 Letran lead. Ato Ular put up a solid defensive play on the other end as he blocked Renz Gonazales’ shot that ultimately led Batalier for another trip to the foul line with 4.9 seconds left.

Batiller, though, went 0-of-2 from the stripe, leaving the door open for the Generals to tie or win the game. Gonzales went for the jugular but he missed his buzzer-beating three-point attempt as the Knights held on for the win.

Ular put up another solid performance as he cashed in 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Letran.

Jerrick Balanza topscored for the Bonnie Tan-mentored squad with 22 points plus three rebounds and two assists, while Batiller chipped in 17 markers in the win.

Taywan paced EAC with 25 points and four assists as JP Maguliano backstopped him with 10 points and seven rebounds. Renz Gonzales put up 13 points and two steals in a losing effort.

The Knights improved to a 4-1 win-loss card as the Generals dropped to a 1-3 record.
