San Beda, JRU clash to start off NCAA Friday triple-header

by Niel Victor Masoy, July 12, 2019 1:19am

The four-peat seeking San Beda University tries to grab back-to-back wins when it faces Jose Rizal University in the first game of the NCAA season 95 triple-header on Friday, July 12 at the San Juan Arena.

Game time is at 12:00 p.m.

The Red Lions (1-0) began their post-Robert Bolick era with a season-opening, 59-46 win at the expense of this season’s hosts - the Arellano University Chiefs - on Sunday, July 7.

Coach Boyet Fernandez is counting on his sophomores Evan Nelle and James Kwekuteye, as well as veterans Clint Doliguez, Calvin Oftana and AC Soberano to get the job done against JRU.

The Heavy Bombers (0-1) are eager to bounce back after opening their season with a tough 82-51 loss to the San Sebastian College - Recoletos Golden Stags on Tuesday, July 9.

Veteran MJ Dela Virgen and sophomores Ry Dela Rosa and Agem Miranda look to join hands and give coach Louie Gonzales his first victory with the Kalentong-based squad.

The Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights (0-1) and the Arellano University Chiefs (0-1) clash in the second game at 2:00 p.m.

Both teams are coming off season-opening losses on Sunday, with Letran bowing to the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 84-80, and Arellano falling to San Beda, 59-46.

Graduating player Jerrick Balanza and big men Larry Muyang and Jeo Ambohot are out to carry the load for the Bonnie Tan-mentored squad.

On the other hand, AU coach Cholo Martin looks at the returning Kent Salado to lead the Chiefs once more.

In his first game back from a knee injury on Sunday, Salado balled out as he tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Capping off the Seniors’ matches for the day is the battle between the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals and the LPU Pirates slated at 4:00 p.m.

EAC (0-1) is fresh from a close 69-66 loss to the De La Salle - College of St. Benilde Blazers on Tuesday, July 9.

JP Maguliano, Jethro Mendoza and Marvin Taywan led the Generals in that game and they look to conspire once more to give Oliver Bunyi his first win as a head coach of EAC.

Meanwhile, LPU (1-0) is out to score a second straight win.

Twins JV and JC Marcelino controlled the Pirates’ ship as they formed a one-two punch combo to knock the Knights down, 84-80, and give LPU its first win in the post-CJ Perez era on Sunday.

The speedy guards are expected to lead the Topex Robinson-mentored squad to victory again.
