Valenzuela SPV TOP Marketplace continues to make noise as one of the hottest teams early this season as they hold off the Cebu Sharks, 69-66, on Thursday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Valenzuela was leading 68-61 with over a minute left in the fourth when Cebu forces two dead ball violations translating into a 7-0 run capped by a William McAloney drive that cut the lead to 66-69 with 41 seconds remaining.
Swarming defense by Cebu caused again another turnover as Jayson Varilla was called for a traveling infraction in the next Valenzuela play.
Despite their chances, Patrick Cabahug missed the potential equalizer for the Sharks. Hans Thiele grabbed the board and got fouled with six seconds left but missed both free throws, leaving the door open for Cebu.
Rhaffy Octubre snatched the defensive rebound that gave McAloney another try. The big ma's attempt, however, was way short as the game ended at 69-66 in favor of Valenzuela.
Jaymar Gimpayan was impressive for Valenzuela with a double-double outing of 11 points and 11 boards while Chris De Chavez had 12 points all in the first half.
Double doubles for Octubre and McAloney with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 12 points, 14 rebounds respectively was not enough for the Sharks as they missed the help of Eloy Poligrates who did not play.
Cebu lost their 13-point lead tallied in the first quarter, 17-4, as Valenzuela rode a 29-point second quarter scoring to lead 37-31 at the half. Valenzuela also brought a 54-48 advantage into the final chapter.
Valenzuela now holds a four-game winning streak over their one defeat while the Cebu Sharks is at 2-3 win-loss card.
Valenzuela will host the GenSan Warriors on July 15 at the Valenzuela Astrodome. The first game on that day will feature Cebu gainst the Iloilo United Royals.
