Caloy Garcia wants more from Carl Montgomery after his solid PBA debut
by Niel Victor Masoy, July 11, 2019 6:22pm
Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia had good things to say for the Elasto Painters' new import in Carl Montgomery, who made his PBA debut on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Montgomery put up 20 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks to help lead Rain or Shine to a crucial victory over the Magnolia Hotshots.
"He’s not the biggest import, not the tallest, not the strongest, but he was able to give us the energy at the start of the second half when he started scoring."
Garcia said that Montgomery was too eager to show up in the first half, but settled down in the second as the 30-year-old American started to hit his shots and gave the Elasto Painters momentum in the contest.
"He did well especially in the second half. In the first half, I think nangigigil siya eh. When he caught the ball inside, I explained to him that it is different here, kasi medyo physical and everbody in the Magnolia side was collapsing on him," Garcia said.
"Luckily for us, in the second half, he started hitting his three-point shots. Hindi nila nakita nung first half. That gave us momentum."
As good as Montgomery was, Garcia wants him to do more as Rain or Shine (5-5) takes on the San Miguel Beermen on Saturday in Cagayan de Oro. A win for the Elasto Painters will secure for them a playoff spot in the tournament.
"Overall, it’s going to be hard. I think he has to give us more numbers especially on the boards.
