The Zamboanga Family's Brand Master Sardines edged out the Bulacan Kuyas, 60-59, thanks to the game winning hook shot of Allan Santos with three seconds remaining on Thursday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Both teams started slow with only 13-12 points performance in the first quarter in favor of the Kuyas. Robin Roño then hit Zamboanga's only three ball in 11 attempts in dying seconds of the first half ending it at 27-27
Bulacan created some separation during the third frame behind Dennis Santos scoring six quick points and a couple of assists after not seeing action in the first 20 minutes of play, 43-40.
In the fourth quarter, Reed Juntilla drilled a triple once again, tying the game at 52 all, but Dan Sara fired five-straight points for the Kuyas to rebuild a four point lead.
Rhaffy Reyes and Robin Roño answered on a lay-up and a triple, giving Zamboanga a 58-57 lead going into the final two minutes of play.
Bulacan got their chances multiple times in the offensive glass as Stephen Siruma cleaned up his own miss, 58-59, with 28 seconds remaining.
The next possession, Zamboanga swung the ball around until it was given to the hands of Allan Santos who was posting up against Siruma, eventually hitting the hook shot over two more defenders to seal the win. Jay-R Taganas then missed a possible game/m-stealing jumper for Bulacan as time exprired.
Reyes stepped up for Zamboanga with 16 points and four assists while Santos' game winner put himself at 12 points and eight rebounds to atone for their consecutive defeats in the Lakan Cup.
Sara was Bulacan's lone player who scored in double digits with 10 points.
With the win, Zamboanga Family's Master Sardines went up at 2-3 win-loss record while Bulacan Kuyas dropped to 3-3.
The Kuyas will try to get their revenge at the expense of the Marikina Shoemasters on July 17 at Bataan People's Center. Zamboanga will challenge the Pasay Voyagers next on July 19 at the Alonte Sports Arena
