Rain or Shine survives Magnolia run to boost playoff bid

by Reynald Magallon, July 10, 2019 6:45pm

The Rain or Shine Elastopainters survived the Magnolia Hotshots, 86-82, to boost their playoff hopes in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

The E-Painters showed some sense of urgency, unleashing an 11-0 run midway through the payoff period to break a 69-all deadlock and take an eleven point lead at 80-69. Both teams came up dry for a couple of minutes before Mark Barocca drilled a long bomb to break the silence with 4:09 remaining.

Belga answered with a fadeaway jumper, but Barocca and Jio Jalalon nailed back-to-back treys to inch the Hotshots closer, 78-82, with 2:23 to go in the payoff period. Daquioag stopped the bleeding for ROS with a jumper but Sangalang retaliated with a short stab with ROS still leading, 84-80.

Jalalon then stole the ball in the next possession but he missed the layup on the other end as he was bothered by Montgomery. The E-Painters then reclaimed possession with 20 seconds left.

Motngomery was then fouled but missed two free throws, leaving the Hotshots a window of hope. Farr, though, missed his layup as Gabe Norwood sealed the game for Rain or Shine with his two free throws.

Beau Belga led the E-Painters with 22 points while Carl Montgomery impressed in his debut with 20 markers. ROS improved to a 5-5 win-loss record and strengthened their hold of a place in the Magic 8.

Sangalang unloaded 24 points while Farr added 19 for the Hotshots, who absorbed their third straight defeat to drop to 5-5.

The Hotshots went off to a hot start, embarking on an early double-digit lead at 20-10. They went on to lead at the end of the first canto, 22-15. Both teams then went toe-to-toe on both ends of the floor with Magnolia retaining a six-point lead at the half, 41-35.

The Elastopainters turned things around in the third frame, embarking on a 12-4 run that turned a 40-45 deficit to a 52-49 lead midway through the third period. They held on to lead by three, 64-61, coming into the fourth.

Rain or Shine will round out its eliminations schedule with a clash against the San Miguel Beermen on Saturday in the Cagayan de Oro City. Magnolia will take on TNT in their final assignment next Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
