Gilas Youth nets first win in U19 World Cup with win over China in classification phase

Gilas Youth finally scored its first win in the FIBA U-19 World Cup, whipping China, 86-72, on Saturday (Philippine time) at the Heraklion University Sports Hall in Greece.
With the victory, the Filipinos have a shot of finishing the world meet as the 13th seed team on Sunday. They are set to face the winner between New Zealand and Senegal later in the day, in a battle for such placing in the tournament.
After a nip-and-tuck battle in the first half, the Philippines pulled away from China in the third quarter by pouring in 31 points spiked by a 12-2 run that gave the former a 15-point, 72-57 lead heading into the payoff period.
The Filipinos then built their largest lead of 18 points, 86-68, in the fourth quarter to take the fight out of the Chinese, and end their five-game losing streak.
Dave Ildefonso punched in 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds to lead Gilas Youth, while Carl Tamayo provided the support by unloading 20 points and six caroms.
Rhayyan Amsali and James Spencer chipped in 11 points apiece in the win.
Haowen Guo paced China with 23 markers, five assists and four boards as Haoran Jiang backstopped him with 16 points and four rebounds that went down the drain.
