by Jim Lemuel Wilson, July 04, 2019 9:03pm

John Wilson and Mike Ayonayon nailed timely baskets to lead the San Juan Knights to a 101-86 domination of the Rizal Golden Coolers on Thursday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Lakan Cup at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

Wilson scored seven points in the first quarter as the Knights took a 25-19 lead heading into the second chapter of the ball game.

San Juan was up 40-34 at the 5:23 mark of the second when Wilson nailed a three-pointer, Lester Reyes scored on a layup, and Ayonayon scored on another layup off a steal to give the Knights a 44-34 advantage with 3:31 left in the first half.

Rizal cut the lead to seven, 39-46, after Rommel Saliente scored on a layup. Wilson, however, replied with a jumper, Jessie Saitanan knocked in a three-pointer, and Wilson drained a three-ball of his own to extend the lead to 15, 54-39, at the half.

The Knights then extended their lead to 18, 68-50, on a Reyes layup at the 3:24 mark of the third canto, but the Golden Coolers came back with Bob Ombecan scoring on a pair of free throws and Janus Lozada hitting laying it in.

Ombecan had another pair of charities and Jayvee Vidal completed a three-point play to cut the lead to come to within 59-68 with just 56 ticks left in the canto. Jeff Tajonera then hit a three-ball and Andoy Estrella sank a layup to push the lead back up to 17, 74-59, heading into the final canto.

The Golden Coolers came to within nine, 68-77, in the final canto once more on a Lozada three-pointer, but Ayonayon scored on a layup and then completed a three-point play, and Wilson sank a fadeaway jumper off the post. Lozada responded with a free throw, but Wilson scored five straight points and CJ Isit scored on a fastbreak layup to put the game away.

Wilson led San Juan with 25 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Ayonayon had 15 markers, five boards, two dimes, and four steals. Orlan Wamar and Jhonard Clarito also had eight points each as 14 out of the 15 players fielded in by coach Randy Alcantara contributed at least two points.

Jordan Rios led Rizal with 16 points, Vidal added 15, Lozada 14, and Mark Benitez 13.

With the win, the Knights now have a 3-0 win-loss record while the Golden Coolers dropped to 1-2. San Juan will play against Bacolod on July 10 while Rizal will go to battle against the Davao Occidental Tigers on July 16.
