The San Juan Knights established a big lead early and survived a huge Pasay Voyagers uprising to take a 74-72 victory on Friday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
The Knights led 24-5 at the end of the first quarter with John Wilson and Jhonard Clarito dropping right and six points, respectively in the canto. The Pirates then limited San Juan to just 16 points in the second quarter while dropping 26 of their own to cut the lead to nine, 31-40 at the half.
After scoring 11 points in the first two quarters, Reverente exploded for 15 more markers in the third quarter as Pasay once again outscored the Knights, 25-19, in the third canto to come to within 56-61.
The Voyagers finally tied the game at 63-63 on an Elmar Moradas three-pointer at the 5:01 mark of the fourth quarter, but Mac Cardona took those three points back with a trey of his own. Moradas then nailed a jumper and Jan Jamon scored on a layup and a jump shot to give Pasay a 69-66 lead with 3:08 to go.
CJ Isit then cut the lead to one with a pair of charities, but Moradas had a split from the foul line to give the Voyagers another two-point lead. Larry Rodriguez tied the game at 70-70 with a layup off an offensive board and Clarito gave the Knights the lead with a split from the foul line. Jamon then hit another jumper, but Isit scored on a layup for a 73-72 San Juan lead with 1:25 left.
Pasay had three chances to take the lead once more, but Jamon missed a jumper, Clarito stole the ball from Jamon, and Ron Lastimosa missed on a three-point try. Clarito then split his free throws for San Juan to set the final score.
Andoy Estrella led the Knights with 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists, one steal, and one block while Wilson had 10 points, two boards, three dimes, and four steals. Rodriguez added 10 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and two blocks while Isit had 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Reverente top-scored for the Voyagers with 26 points that also came with 16 boards, four steals, and one block while Jamon added 12 points and three rebounds. Moradas and Lastimosa added 11 markers each.
With the win, the Knights now have a 2-0 win-loss record while the Voyagers slid to 2-1.
