Aris Dionisio came up with key plays down the stretch to lead the Manila Stars to an 86-85 victory over the red-hot Quezon City Capitals on Tuesday in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
The game was tied at 82-82 when Joco Tayongtong hit a three-pointer to put the Capitals ahead with 25.2 ticks left on the clock.
Dionisio then came up with an offensive rebound and a putback on the next Manila offensive to cut the lead to one. The lanky big man then stole the ball from Tayongtong and then attacked the basket on a fastbreak play to put the Stars ahead 86-85 with 11.7 seconds to go.
Dionisio missed on the free throw and Ronnie Matias grabbed the offensive board. The Capitals then came up with a stop, leading to a supposedly wide open layup for Tayongtong
Dionisio, however, chased down the play and came up with a solid block to seal the victory.
Dionisio finished with 21 points, 13 coming in the first half, along with 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks. Marvin Lee also had 17 points and five rebounds in his MPBL debut. Carlo Lastimosa struggled from the field but still came up with 12 points.
Tayongtong had 16 points to lead the Capitals, Tonino Gonzaga added 14 while Clark Derigue and Jomar Santos chipped in 12 apiece.
QC came out firing from downtown to take a 24-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. They were up by as many as 15 points in the second before Manila woke up to tie the game at the half, 45-45. It was a tight game the rest of the way with the Capitals leading 70-68 heading into the final frame.
