‘San Sebastian will be one of the top four teams’ in NCAA season 95, says Boyet Fernandez

The San Beda University Red Lions beat the San Sebastian College Recoletos Golden Stags, 71-59, to remain unbeaten in the 13th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup with a 6-0 slate Monday at the San Juan Arena.
San Beda, however, had to earn the victory.
The Boyet Fernandez-mentored squad put up a rousing start as it led by as much as 17 points (21-4), only to allow the gritty San Sebastian team to come within a point, 55-54, with 6:17 left in regulation.
The Red Lions had to rely on the heroics of Evan Nelle, Donald Tankoua, James Canlas, and Clint Doliguez, who joined hands and put up a 16-2 run to avert a collapse and stave off the Golden Stags.
While San Sebastian lost the game, the Egay Macaraya-mentored squad certainly earned the respect of San Beda multi-titled head coach in Fernandez.
The 47-year old tactician even went as far as saying that the Golden Stags are bound to make the Final Four of the NCAA Season 95, which is set to open next month.
“It's really a strong team for me. Even though they are not as tall as the other teams, but with their defense, tenacity, and hardwork, San Sebastian will be one of the top four teams in the NCAA,” Fernandez said.
“I've been watching San Sebastian since Michael Calisaan left. That team really plays well, jells a lot. They really follow what coach Egay Macaraya is doing.”
Fernandez knows all too well what he was saying. His team has just suffered a dismal loss to the Golden Stags in the PBA D-League last May 7.
The Red Lions (who carried the name Meteropac Movers) led by as much as 20 points in that game but went on to bow down to the Stags (who carried the name Valencia, Bukidnon Golden Harvest), 96-92, in second overtime.
Allyn Bulanadi and RK Ilagan led San Sebastian in the contest with 32 and 31 points, respectively. It was just one of those games in the D-League where the duo willed the Golden Stags to the victory.
Bulanadi didn’t play on Monday due to his dislocated right shoulder injury while Ilagan scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth and got the Stags within a point.
Fernandez gave props to the dynamic duo.
“And then RK Ilagan and Allyn Bulanadi really play well now that the role ay na sa kanila na. Naibigay na ni Calisaan tapos sumasama pa yung laro ng ibang teammates nila.”
The other Stags are also coming through, indeed. JM Calma, Mario Bonleon, and Aljohn Capobres are just one of the Stags who have been playing really well since the team’s D-League stint which they ended with a top four finish.
“It will be tough to beat them in the NCAA. Every game they will be tough and I hope my boys realize that,” Fernandez remarked.
