Finals MVP June Mar Fajardo said that he is proud of the entire San Miguel Beermen squad for never giving up despite being down by a huge margin early in the game on Wednesday in Game 7 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
The Beermen had a quick start to the game as they scored the first seven points, four of which came from Fajardo. Things quickly changed however when the Magnolia Hotshots started to rally and the Beermen found themselves behind by 17 points, 26-43, at the 9:31 mark of the third quarter.
San Miguel, however, did not give up as they slowly clawed their way back into the game. Come the endgame, the Beermen just made better plays.
“Sobrang proud ako na part ako sa team na ‘to kasi ‘di kami nag-give up kahit na lamang sila nang malaki,” Fajardo said after receiving his third Finals MVP award.
“Pinakita namin yung puso namin sa game na ‘to. Sobrang proud ako sa team na ‘to,” the now seven-time PBA champion said.
Things were looking bleak for the Beermen through most of the first quarter as the team struggled, but Arwind Santos hit just enough shots to keep San Miguel alive. Come crunch time, it was Alex Cabagnot who took over, scoring nine of his 18 total points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead fadeaway jumper over the Hotshots’ defense.
But it was Fajardo who showed all heart throughout the game as he tallied 17 points and a record-setting 31 rebounds, the most by any local player in PBA history.
