Caloocan Supremos guard Cedric Labing-isa believes that his stint as an assistant coach to Jamike Jarin with the National University Bulldogs helps him better prepare for the third season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Currently working on the sidelines for the Bulldogs in the ongoing 2019 FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup, Labing-isa is learning so much from group of coaches surrounding him.
“Yung pagiging assistant coach ko sa NU, napakalaking bagay kasi sobrang dami kong natututunan sa mga mentor ko, kanila coach Jamike [Jarin], coach Danny [Ildefonso], and coach Jeff Napa,” Labing-isa said in a text message sent to Courtside Philippines.
“Malaking tulong sa maturity and leadership ko yon on and off the court,” Labing-isa, a former Bulldog himself, added.
In 25 games for the Supremos last season, the 5’ 7” court general averaged 6.04 points, 2.20 rebounds, 2.84 assists, 0.92 steals, and 16.41 minutes per outing. He is looking to do even more as he return to the team for the next tournament.
Labing-sa also said that after the Supremos’ exit in the Quarterfinals of the North Division in the Datu Cup, he rested for a while and focused on his coaching job. Two weeks ago, Caloocan started their preparations for the next season.
“[We’re] doing well naman po. Medyo nakukumpleto na yung lineup,” he said about the team’s practices.
Labing-isa also said that former PBA player AJ Mandani is proving to be a great addition for the team this preseason.
“Actually, sobrang fit ni AJ sa team. Sobrang hardworking and aggressive. And yung leadership niya, malaking tulong sa team namin. Yung game shape naman niya, sobrang okay din, siya pa nga yung [pinaka-]kondisyon samin ngayon,” Labing-isa said.
