Dave Ildefonso does not mind his struggles on the offensive end in the 2019 FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup as long as it helps hime prepare for the next University Athletic Association of the Philippines’ next men’s basketball season.
On Tuesday, Ildefonso led the National University Bulldogs to an 82-77 come-from-behind victory over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws to record their first win of the tournament against one loss.
There, the son of the legendary Danny I. had 19 points, five rebounds, and one assist. But Ildefonso’s struggle was evident as he shot just 5-of-11 (45%) from the two-point area, 2-of-8 (25%) from beyond the arc, and 3-of-5 (60%) from the free throw line. He also turned the ball over three times and even shot two airballs late in the game.
Asked about his mishaps on the offensive end, Ildefonso replied: “Siyempre part lang naman ‘yon e.”
“This is summer league lang naman. This is where we’re getting more experience and this is where yung ibang teammates ko makakakuha ng kompyansa and playing time,” he said.
“So mas okay na akong mag-struggle dito kesa dun sa UAAP season. Mas marami akong matutunan dito, and mas madami akong makuhang experience sa mga kalaban ko,” Ildefonso said.
