Former Gilas Pilipinas head coach and current Ateneo Blue Eagles tactician Tab Baldwin is back with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) as program director for Gilas Pilipinas Youth, the country's basketball governing body announced on Wednesday.
Baldwin's appointment is part of the restructuring of the country's basketball program.
"The decorated international coach recently displayed his penchant for youth development, grooming the Ateneo Blue Eagles into back-to-back champions in the UAAP," SBP said in a statement during the press conference at the Araneta Coliseum where SBP also unveiled the redesigned logo of Gilas Pilipinas and SBP.
Baldwin will play a huge role in the Gilas youth development program considering his vast experience in international play and his ability to hone and develop young players as seen in his stint with the Blue Eagles in collegiate caging circuit.
With Baldwin heading the program, his assistant coach in Ateneo, Sandy Arespacochaga will be calling the shots for the Gilas Youth squad that will see action in the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Heraklion, Greece.
"Sandy's demeanor is perfect for our young players. He is a natural teacher whose method of teaching is what our young players will embrace and appreciate. He uses his strong communication skills and low key personality to get the best out of his personnel," Panlilio said.
Gilas Pilipinas youth will be boasting its young talents in the World Meet headed by twin towers AJ Edu and Kai Sotto who are both currently abroad for their respective committments but Arespacochaga and the SBP are expecting the two along side Filipino Italian guard Dalph Panopio to join the team in their World cup build-ups.
